8. Love sees not with the eyes – Haberdashers’ Borough Academy

Artist: Students from Haberdasher’s Borough Academy

Location: Red Cross Gardens

“Love sees not with the eyes but with the mind, and therefore is cupids winged arrow painted blind.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act 1, Scene 1

Better Bankside worked in partnership with students from  local Bankside school, Haberdashers’ Borough Academy to create four distinct pieces of art on wooden railway sleepers. The Year 8 art scholars group worked on the pieces with Art Academy London artist, Alice Clarke and also had a Shakespeare workshop with actor and coach Michael Fenner to help bring the words to life.  All four pieces of art have been situated within Bankside green spaces thanks to the generosity of Bankside Open Spaces Trust. They can be found in Crossbones Graveyard, Red Cross Gardens and Marlborough Sports Garden.

Haberdashers’ Borough Academy is built on the old fire station site on Southwark Bridge Road, opposite Mint Street Park, with sports facilities on the Grotto Place site, which is between Sawyer Street and Sturge Street. The school is a comprehensive with 180 places in each year group up to age 16.

The students chose quotes that demonstrate the full range of emotions from cheeky and mischievous, to seriously loving and desperately sad and  worked with the artist to develop a design that echoes the feeling of each quote.
