Kirkaldy Testing Museum

Have you spotted the words ‘Facts not Opinions’ carved over the doorway at 99 Southwark Street? It was the motto of Victorian engineer David Kirkaldy, and this was where, in 1874, he opened the world’s first independent commercial testing house, scientifically testing samples sent to Bankside from around the globe to ensure some of those iconic bridges we use every day would still be standing now. Inside is even more remarkable – Kirkaldy’s gigantic Universal Testing Machine survives, with other machines that tell the story of the Kirkaldy family and materials testing.
