Frost Fairs were a time of great revelry for the people of Bankside and indeed London, with games, stalls and parties galore!
Activities included horse and coach racing, ice skating and puppet plays, as well as football, nine-pin bowling and sledding. There were also other activities that would be considered cruel or controversial in present times, or even illegal. They included bull-baiting, fox hunting, and throwing at cocks. During the last Frost Fair in 1814, an elephant was walked across the ice alongside Blackfriars Bridge.
Our re-imagined Frost Fair celebrates some of the traditional and not so traditional activities of the time including theatre, workshops, tours and lino printing! Get involved with one of the many activities in Bankside listed below.
